They say the journey is more important than the destination, and West Coast emcee J.Lately agrees. This week, he links up with Jamla Records' own Ian Kelly to bring you a chilled out new track in "Take My Time". The simple yet infectious beat lays the canvas for the two artists to display their own individual styles, both providing a fresh and forward thinking approach to some classic hip hop. This song is the third single off of Lately's upcoming project, The Campfire EP, which is produced entirely by Trey C. While it can be easy to get caught up in today's rat race, "Take My Time" is the perfect track to slow down and enjoy the ride to.

This Silis & Yodaroc album was inspired by the snail crawling on the edge of a straight razor and surviving line from the movie Apocalypse Now, they thought it was the perfect quote to base an entire album on. With times as they are Silis & Yodaroc wanted to vent and be as authentic as possible, reflecting how some people feel about today. "We wanted to be as serious as possible and have every song sound like they go together because we feel that albums nowadays miss that and at the same time we didn't want to depress people but have them agree while also maybe making people crack a smile with some of the things we say." #silis #yodaroc #andsurviving #culturepower45

The hard hitting apocalyptic instrumental is accompanied by the deep graspy flow by Munsin. This joint is the first single off the upcoming Hardtimes Records EP titled "The Devil's Grin" fully produced by Stu Bangas. The EP is set to drop in late July. Named the rising neo-soul sound – Sunny’smusic combines a feel-good fusion of rap, jazz, and electronica dripping with soulful psychedelic. After going on to record the "Hardhood Classics" mixtape series, Hitch solidified his fan base and proved that he is a capable lyricist.
I had the good fortune a couple weeks back to chop it up with Throwback Champ & this is the interview that was birthed from that awe-inspiring conversation.
How did you first become interested in DJ’ing?
It was about seventh grade. I’ve always been a fan of the art form because I’m a hip-hop historian, I’m 45 & was born & partially raised in the Soundview section of The Bronx; so by the time I was coming up I couldn’t help but be influenced by the music that was being birthed around me.
How did you get your first dj setup?
I fell into it-The 1st turntables I bought through a relative of mine, he charged to a credit card & I had the techniques with a Gemini mixer.
What is one of the first records you fell in love with?
The Art of Noise: Beatboxing. It’s a break beat really remember I will just play that shit over and over again.
What is your favorite genre of music to spin? To listen to when you're not spinning?
That’s a tough question because I love hip-hop but I’ll be honest with you right up there with hip-hop are classics & I’m a big reggae fan.
Would you rather still use Vinyl or digital?
As I’ve told you I’m all about the classics vibe so I definitely love vinyl, but I can’t front being able to just bring a couple of flash drives & my laptop to any club in the world is definitely the move.
What is the one must have in your setup?
My sound effects drive for sure. Dropping a classic reggae track without blasting horns to hype it up; don’t make for memorably dope party.
Can you name a time where you were spinning and everything was going wrong?
Absolutely. It was just now in December I was one of three DJs that was spinning a birthday party,Lord Finesse & Psycho Les amongst others were spinning as well. The venue had their own controller, so I didn’t bring mine but of course they’re controller had a short in it; so I had to deal w/that throughout my entire set.
How about a happy memory that makes you laugh everytime it comes up?
I had a party in Jersey for my brothers birthday, which of course I didn’t get paid for because I’m not gonna charge my brother. I actually spent money because I had to go up there, get the venue & bring all my equipment & you know the time & work I put in; but the memories from that night can’t be matched in regards to having a grand old time w/my friends & family.
What was your favorite club to work in?
I have only spun in lounge type venues, you know I’m not a commercial type DJ, but I’d say there’s two spots I really like there’s a place over here (Florida) called The Aztec Room a cigar lounge (COVID put an end to that) & A little spot I was doing up in Jersey called Paulie’s it’s a little bar & we used to get it turned up out there.. The parties were so dope there
What do you love about dj’ing and what do you dislike about the profession?
The love is just basically, I lose myself when I’m spinning music; you know what I’m saying
I literally transport myself mentally to another time and place playing music.
That’s what my parties are man a journey.
What I don’t like is when you start transitioning into doing it for monetary purposes a whole lot of politics get involved & I find that whole scene totally unnecessary. Which is why you’ll never catch me kissing ass trying to get into some hoity-toity club, I do the venues I want to & I play the records I want to; I do this for me -not for anybody else’s imaginary brownie points so I could get a dream gig.
As instrumental Hip Hop albums seem to be at an all-time high, ranging from so called lo-fi aesthetics to progressive sounds with electronic vibes, one of Austrian Hip Hop’s godfathers and OGs on the boards has finally dropped an instrumental album on his own. The title "Experiences" has been chosen not without reason as it both reflects the personal experiences the artists Flip has gone through in his 25 years plus career but also hint the influences and musical aspects that went into this album.
Flip has tried to give insight into his musical influences that began in the 80s with groups like Public Enemy or EPMD into the 90s era with sounds ranging from Native Tongue territory to a DJ Premier or Pete Rock or the DITCproducers, when he started making beats on his own for his rap group Texta. You can hear links to other production wizards like J Dilla, Hi-Tec or Madlibthat changed the sampling techniques post 2000 with albums like Donuts, Hi-teknology or Madvillain. So yes, "Experiences" is sample-based but further developed by Flip with original basslines, keys, guitar riffs played by the producer himself.
Put your headphones on and check out "Fridays Live At Home / Sunrise At Five", two early tracks from the album. "Expierences" will release on June 5th on all digital platforms, vinyl and compact cassette. There is also a limited vinyl edition available exclusively at HHV Records including a 7inch with a Sadat X & Fokis track and Onyx remix.

HYPER ROMANCE OUT SEPTEMBER 25TH; PRE-ORDER NOW
Bristol-based duo Jadu Heart have announced their second album, Hyper Romance, is slated for release on September 25th. In conjunction with the announcement, they've shared a new single and video for "Walk The Line," which offers insight into the album's interplay between calm and chaos. Blissfully paced, "Walk the Line" explores the calmer side of the equation, with a pared-back beat and bassline providing a perfect canvas for the duo's airy vocals as the guitar-driven song explores the anxieties that coincide with coming of age.
"Like a few songs from the album, it's about growing older," explain Jadu Heart's Alex Headford and Diva Jeffrey. "When we met, we would spend a lot of time locked away with the common symptoms of a confused teenager going through an existential crisis. We've calmed down a lot now." The visual features a lo-fi aesthetic with Headford and Jeffrey singing, playing guitar, and lounging alongside nature.
"Walk The Line" follows Jadu Heart's "Another Life", "Dead Again" and "Suddenly I Know Who You Are" earning recognition from CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND, NYLON,UNDER THE RADAR and more. Both born to artistic families, Headford and Jeffrey were naturally drawn to music from a young age. Gathering acclaim for their unique combination of visual arts and songwriting prowess, Jadu Heart's early releases were co-signed by publications like i-D and WONDERLAND. After relocating to Bristol following the release of their debut album, the duo retreated into a basement studio to record the bones of their follow-up with a few amps and cheap distortion pedals. The resulting project blends raw, energetic psych-rock with sonic healing.
Stay tuned for more news to follow and check out Jadu Heart's music below.
