The current climate of the world and being in lockdown has led us to search for ways to occupy time and in my case pay closer attention to various things I come across while on the web and social media. During my recent search I came across an artist that caught my eye first and foremost through colors, then artistic expression, and bold presentation, Miss Kiriko. With that being said I dug into the art where I was taken back by the sound of her music which has a lofi quality to it but also in how melodic it was while being vulnerably fearless in what she chose to speak on as well as howl it was done. She pours her heart out into the music but when listening closer you can hear she is having fun and also just doesn’t give a shit what you think. She’s gonna do her regardless! I was hooked. I clicked the link in her bio which connects to her most recent video “Fortune Cookie.” I was blown away with how dope this video was. Having dabbled in editing and various other forms of media I knew there was a ton of skill at work here. The animation alone had me feeling those “wtf this shit is crazy” vibes in the best way possible. The costumes, the music, the make up, the backdrops, and her performance all came together in what I would call beginnings of masterful work. I needed more… I like how she would speak in her native tongue (Japanese) in different parts seemingly saying “fuck it, figure it out.” At that point I went back to IG, hit her up, and asked what else I can see/hear to and she pointed me to her latest mixtape on spotify “April Fool.” The 1st track “Sakura Tree” is soft, sexy, and beautifully delivered. She moves on through the April Fool project where you can hear her beginning to open up and delve into more elements of love and music. I needed to know who hurt this amazing soul then I got to “He Got Me Fucked Up” and it was a wrap. She got it! I loved the rest of the project and knew I needed to interview her to find out what made her tick and how all of this art that seemed to have an army behind it was being produced. What I ended up finding out was, it’s all her. Kiriko designed all of the outfits, did all of her makeup, shot and animated all of her videos, and edited them. (Insert mind blown emoji) I asked her what sparked the musical/artistic aspirations and she explained her dad, who was a “Japanese, Reggae, Soul artist” would take her to drum circles in Venice Beach (I have to meet this guy). Rounding out the immense amount of skills Kiriko has to choose from she is also a tattoo artist with a following, fashion designer, and loves to feed her friends which she documents on her social and are both hilarious but also a lil scary like she may stab someone lol. We hope to do a video interview with her in the near future but in the meantime make sure you check out April Fool via spotify, all other streaming platforms, and subscribe to her youtube channel because you aren’t going to want to miss these vids when they drop.
Peace and Love,
